What should I do if I'm in crisis or having a very hard time?
If you or someone you know are having a hard time, it is urgent that you reach out for help immediately. If you’re having suicidal thoughts or behaviors, call 911 or get to your nearest emergency room. You can also call the national suicide prevention hotline at 800-273-8255. You are not alone, and I promise this horrible feeling will pass. But, you need to reach out for help right now. You don’t have to suffer. Once this crisis is over, I would be honored to work with you to find a way to live pain-free from now on.
What should I do if my partner is depressed?
When the person you love the most in the world is suffering from depression you can end up with a lot of emotions. You may feel sad, worried, hopeless, frustrated, and overwhelmed. That’s all normal. The good news is there are lots of things you can do. Remember to put your mask on first! Get support for yourself. Talk to family and friends. Or, get into a support group or online forum for partners of folks suffering from depression. Find yourself a therapist if needed.
Remember that you have a powerful position as their primary person. Sometimes it only takes letting them know you notice what’s happening. That you see them suffering, and you want to help. Remember that when we get depressed, it can be very hard to reach out to a therapist. Depression can cause shame and embarrassment. So, asking for help in Pasadena, CA, or Sacramento, CA can be very scary.
One thing I have had several clients do is to go into couples therapy with their partner. With you by their side, they might find the support and courage they need to face the depression.
