Advanced Consultation for Therapists Working With Couples

Couples work can move quickly from straightforward to highly complex. This six-session consultation cohort is designed for licensed therapists and associates who are already working with couples and want practical, advanced consultation around the cases that challenge them most.

Each meeting centers on real clinical material brought by participants. Together, the group will examine the couple, the therapeutic process, the therapist’s experience of the case and possible ways forward.

The emphasis is on case consultation and live clinical thinking rather than a predetermined curriculum. Teaching and Q&A develop organically from the cases brought into the room.

What We May Work With

High Conflict

Working when escalation, defensiveness, shutdown or entrenched cycles dominate the session.

Betrayal & Trust Ruptures

Helping couples navigate affairs, secrecy, injury and the difficult work of rebuilding trust.

Attachment Dynamics

Recognizing and intervening with the attachment strategies shaping the couple’s interaction.

Communication & Intimacy

Moving beyond communication techniques toward deeper relational change.

Countertransference & Therapist Self-Care

Understanding what difficult couples evoke in the therapist and using that information clinically.

Complex &
Stuck Cases

Clarifying formulation and identifying new interventions when treatment has stalled.

How the Consultation Group Works

people in group therapy

1. Bring a Case

Each participant prepares and submits a written couples case presentation during the six-month cohort.

2. Work With the Case

Cases are explored through discussion, formulation, experiential work, role play, clinical demonstration and direct consultation with Dr. Tickner.

3. Learn From the Room

Teaching and Q&A develop organically from the clinical material, creating learning opportunities for the entire group.

* A note about case presentations: All participants are expected to submit a case. Depending on the needs of the group and complexity of the material, one or two cases may be worked during each meeting, so not every submitted case is guaranteed to be worked live during the six-session series.

An Integrative Approach

This consultation group is not tied to a single couples therapy model. Dr. Tickner draws from more than 25 years of clinical experience and integrates a range of relational, experiential, somatic and mindfulness-based approaches into his work.

His training and clinical influences include PACT, Hakomi, somatic psychology, mindfulness, drama therapy and experiential approaches.

Participants are welcome from any theoretical orientation. The focus is not on learning one particular model, but on expanding clinical thinking and developing more options for working with complex couples cases.
